Testing Hypotheses with Dirty OCR and Web-Based Tools in Periodical Studies
DOI: 10.14361/9783839454190-005
Based on a rather small digitization project of a German World War I periodical, the article asks for the possibilities of testing hypotheses with »dirty« OCR and free available tools. After an outline of the creation of the corpus, it shows two different approaches to working with digital tools as tests for the functionality of provisional and erroneous digital data. The results are compared to those reached by traditional methods of »close reading« and examined for their potentials in an academic world that is driven more and more to be project-based.
